The Port Alberni Athletics U15 Girls’ soccer team have continued in their defence as champions of Vancouver Island.

On February 26, the Athletics travelled in the snow to Nanaimo to play a Provincial Qualifier versus their rivals, Harbour City FC. The team was delayed by an accident at Cameron Lake, resulting in a late, and somewhat rushed start to the game.

The Athletics carried the play for the entire game, with Nanaimo being on their heels the whole time. Harbour City managed to score two goals, to the Athletics’ one. The 2-1 loss eliminated Port Alberni from Provincial playoffs.

However, on March 5, the Athletics played in Comox for the North Island Championship, and a chance to play for the Island Cup, at the end of April.

The Athletics needed an early save from their keeper to settle things down, and despite a sloppy first half, Port Alberni was up 2-0 at halftime.

A few adjustments led to a much better second half, with the Athletics dominating play for the last 45 minutes. They led 3-0, then 3-1, then finally were victorious 4-1.

The team will play next on April 30, in Cowichan, versus the Victoria champion (TBA) for the U15 Island Cup.

The team would again like to thank Remax, Mountain View Bakery, and Coulson’s for their support.
