Four goals in the second period helped the Aldergrove Kodiaks to a 9-4 rout of the Abbotsford Pilots.
The junior B hockey clubs faced off at Abbotsford’s MSA Arena on Friday, Sept. 13, as Aldergrove evened their record at 1-1 in the Pacific Junior Hockey League. The Kodiaks had lost their season opener 5-2 to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Sept. 11 at the Aldergrove Arena.
But it was a different story in Abbotsford as the Kodiaks used a deadly power play — it struck for four goals on four opportunities — to ground the Pilots. The Pilots only scored once in seven power plays.
Aldergrove led 2-1 after 20 minutes before blowing the game open in the second for a 6-1 advantage. Each team scored three times in the third.
Scott McHaffie paced the attack with two goals and an assist while Stephen Ryan and Elvis Jansons each had one goal and two helpers.
Matthew Vela, CJ Lilies, Kenny Prato, Jackson Wanick and Spencer McHaffie had a goal apiece.
Kodiaks’ keeper Cole MacInnes stopped 22 of the 26 shots he faced.
Kodiak Jackson Waniek was first star and Scott McHaffie was second star of the game.
WOLF PACK SPOILS KODIAKS OPENER
The North Vancouver Wolf Pack scored three times in the final period to post a 5-2 victory over the Aldergrove Kodiaks on the opening night of the Pacific Junior Hockey League season.
The game was played at Aldergrove Arena on Sept. 11.
The teams were tied at one after 20 minutes and the Wolf Pack’s Marcus Houck put the visitors ahead for good with the only goal of the second.
Taylor Tanti — son of former Vancouver Canuck Tony Tanti — scored twice in the third while Connor Pasco and Spencer Quon had the other North Vancouver goals.
Jackson Waniek had opened the scoring for Aldergrove while Stephen Ryan tallied in the third.
Cole MacInnes made 40 saves in the loss.
The Kodiaks host the Ridge Meadows Flames on Sept. 18, 7:15 p.m. at the Aldergrove Arena.
This coming week the Kodiaks travel to Mission Leisure Centre to play the City Outlaws Thursday, Sept. 19, 7:15 p.m. and the Burnaby Winter Club on Sunday, Sept. 22 to play the Grandview Steelers at 4 p.m.
The Kodiaks’ next home game is Wednesday, Sept. 25 when they host the Port Moody Panthers. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
