Trinity Western’s Tessa Ratzlaff was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star after she led the Spartans in both points and rebounds this season.
The third-year Ratzlaff earns her first conference honour following a season in which she averaged 16.7 points per game, which put her fourth most in Canada West, and 7.4 rebounds per game, which had her 11th in the conference. She also finished fifth in Canada West with a 50.4 shooting percentage.
The Spartans season came to an end last week as they lost 82-59 and 57-41 to the Regina Cougars in the Canada West quarter-finals.
Playing the third-ranked Cougars in Regina, the Spartans found themselves tied at 34 with one quarter to play in game two.
And the Spartans would lead by two in the fourth quarter before a 15-2 run gave the Cougars an insurmountable advantage to win the best-of-three series two games to none.
“I asked the team to battle and leave it all on the floor tonight and they did. It was nice to see us give ourselves a shot at taking a win away in this series but we just ran out of gas towards the end,” said TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul.
“It did not go our way tonight but I reminded them that they are history makers. We have been doing things the right way and we want to continue to build on this next phase of our program. We now have a picture of what it takes to get to Canada West final four and look forward to the next chance to get after it.”
Ratzlaff had 16 points to lead all scorers while Kayla Gordon had a double-double in the loss with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
In game one, the Spartans led 19-18 after one quarter and kept the game competitive in every quarter except for the second when they were outscored 25-6.
Gordon led the team with 21 points and eight rebounds while Natalie Carkner had 15 points.
