Carson Foy picked the pocket of a Juan de Fuca defender and turned it into a breakaway game-winner with 1:19 remaining as the Campbell River Ravens bantams notched a 10-8 win over the Whalers in Vancouver Island Minor Lacrosse play at Rod Brind’Amour Arena Sunday.
The win capped a sweep of the team’s home-opening weekend, following a 17-3 romp over Cowichan Valley Saturday.
Overall, Campbell River’s first weekend of home games provided mixed results, including one-goal games by each of the Ravens’ three midget teams. The Midget A Ravens led Saanich late in the third period before suffering a 6-5 loss to the Tigers Sunday after falling 7-3 to Cowichan Valley Saturday.
The Midget B Ravens topped Saanich 4-3 to improve to 1-1 on the season, but the Midget C Ravens suffered a 7-6 loss to Cowichan.
The Peewee B Ravens dropped a pair of contests, 17-1 to Oceanside Saturday and 11-2 to Comox on the road Sunday.
The Novice Ravens open their season this weekend with a home-and-home series against Nanaimo, traveling south Saturday before hosting the Timbermen at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Brindy.
Bantams 10, Juan de Fuca 8
Foy’s steal and tiebreaking goal came after the Whalers had scored three straight times to erase an 8-5 deficit in the see-saw game. Teammate Reid Matthews then added a final insurance goal with 34 seconds to play.
Both Foy and Matthews finished with hat tricks in the win, while Ethan Mainprize scored twice and Blake Doherty and Dakota Sinclair added scores.
Juan de Fuca jumped to a 2-0 lead before Campbell River responded with four straight goals across the first and second periods. The Whalers then rallied with back-to-back scores in the second to knot the game 4-4 before the Ravens regained their footing — and lead — with two goals late in the second.
Saanich 6, Midget A 5
One week after falling 8-2 to the Tigers in Saanich, the Ravens were up 5-4 and rolling a power play with three-and-a-half minutes to go when disaster struck. The Tigers’ Zack Dhillon scooped a loose ball in his own end and raced the length of the court to score the tying goal shorthanded with 3:13 left, and teammate Jackson Boyd notched the game-winner with 2:34 left to complete the rally.
Nolan Fair’s hat trick paced the Ravens’ offence, with Zach Lontayao and Andy Hunt adding goals. Goalie Will McLean kept Campbell River in the game as the Ravens were outshot 50-23.
