Basketball back at high school gyms

NANAIMO – The regular season resumes today (Jan. 8) with several games around the city, including some interesting ones.

High school students might be reluctant about returning to school this month, but there’s a positive – it means basketball’s back.

The regular season resumes today (Jan. 8) with several games around the city, including some interesting ones.

The senior AA boys’ league sees the Wellington Wildcats take on the Woodlands Eagles at Woodlands at 7 p.m., while the Barsby Blazers visit the Nanaimo District Islanders, also at 7 p.m. The Cedar Spartans play at Ladysmith.

In senior AA girls’ play, the only all-Nanaimo matchup is Wellington at Cedar at 5 p.m. NDSS will host Ladysmith at 5 p.m. and Barsby and Woodlands are on the road.

Senior AAA basketball league play resumes later this month, but the Dover Bay Dolphins senior boys were busy in tournament action this past weekend, winning one of their four games at the Cowichan Elite Invitational tournament.

Dover started with a 93-72 win over Belmont on Thursday in which the Dolphins hit 14 three-pointers. Wes Richardson supplied half those treys and finished with a game-high 24 points. The next day Dover fell 85-54 to top-ranked Oak Bay. Michael Pereira was top scorer with 14 points. Also Friday, Dover lost 91-47 to Sheldon Williams Collegiate, with Dan Heppt leading his team with 14 points. St. Mary’s beat Dover on Saturday by an 85-65 score; Christian Wigmore scored 22 for the Dolphins.
