BCHL extra: Thompson signs with Yellow Jackets

The Prince George Spruce Kings are sending their goaltender to the American International College Yellow Jackets next season.

Prince George Spruce Kings netminder Kirk Thompson has committed to the American International College, and will suit up for the Yellow Jackets next season.

AIC is an NCAA division one school located in Springfield, MA.

The Yellow Jackets play in the Atlantic Hockey conference. The 12 team circuit is a popular destination for BCHL grads, with teams like Merrimack, RIT and Mercyhurst aggressively recruiting junior A talent.

Thompson has set several franchise records during his stay in Prince George, posting career-best numbers in his final season.

The 20-year-old has 20 wins, a 2.71 goals-against average and .918 save percentage as the regular season comes to a close.

“The organization would like to congratulate Kirk on this tremendous achievement,” said Spruce Kings general manager Mike Hawes. “Kirk has worked very hard to attain this scholarship. Kirk is the type of person and player that we strive to have in our organization and is very deserving of this honor. AIC is getting a tremendous goaltender and a tremendous young man.”

Thompson becomes the sixth player on the team’s active roster to secure a NCAA division one scholarship. Mitch Eden, Coltyn Hansen, Jace Hennig, Kevin Guiltinan and Cameron Lawson are the others.
