Bearcats to play for national gold

The Columbia Bible College men’s volleyball team is off to the national championship game in Sherbrooke, Que. after defeating Briercrest College in a five-set thriller in Friday’s semifinal.

The Bearcats edged the Clippers, from Caronport, Sask., by scores of 17-25, 25-14, 25-22, 18-25, 15-8.

“I’m really proud of the team, how we persevered against Briercrest,” CBC head coach Rocky Olfert said. “Both teams carried momentum throughout the match, and we were able to catch some of that in the fifth and build a comfortable lead. Everyone stepped up their game to another level and now we get a chance to play for a national title.”

Rookie outside hitter Will Quiring was named player of the game after racking up 19 kills, while Matt Kaminski tallied 22 kills from the right side. Middles Thomas Charbonneau and Danny Grant combined for 10 blocks.

It’s the first time CBC will play in a CCAA national championship game. It’s also the first all-B.C. final, as the Bearcats will take on the No. 1-ranked UBC Okanagan Heat of Kelowna, a team they have yet to beat this year.

The gold medal game is set for 4 p.m. PST today.
