Belmont girls win twice at B.C. rugby championships

Up-and-comers in rugby spotlight between Canada Womens Sevens matches

Canada’s women’s national rugby  program wasn’t the only one on display on the West Shore this past weekend.

The B.C. High School Girls Rugby Association played the third/fourth game and Cup final for its provincial championship in between matches at the Canada Women’s Sevens tournament at Westhills Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Brentwood College came away the victors, beating Abbotsford secondary 15-7 in a hard-fought match. Lake City from Williams Lake – hometown of senior women’s sevens player Kayla Moleschi – took third with a 32-10 win over Cowichan.

The Belmont Bulldogs also competed in the event, opening with a 17-0 win over Nechako Valley at the University of Victoria’s Wallace Field on Friday.

The Bulldogs followed that up with a slim 7-0 loss to Vancouver’s Yale and a 22-5 loss to Valleyview of Kamloops, but rebounded to beat Handsworth of North Vancouver 29-5 in the Bowl quarter-finals.

Saturday’s Bowl semifinal at Centennial Stadium saw the Bulldogs drop a 22-5 decision to Elgin Park of Surrey, who went on to beat fellow mainland squad McRoberts for the Bowl title.

The day’s other final games saw Oak Bay take the Shield with a 20-0 win over Handsworth, and Vanier from Courtenay down Yale 17-0 for the Plate.
