Big-time rugby matches in Langford over next month

Series of high-level events begins with this weekend's university men's and women's sevens championships at Westhills Stadium

Westhills Stadium and Goudy Field in Langford are the places to be for exciting rugby action for the next month or so.

Rugby Canada is hosting a number of international events at the parks, starting with this weekend’s 2015 National University Sevens Championship.

The men’s and women’s tournaments run concurrently, starting with the University of Victoria Vikes men playing Calgary at 9 a.m. today (March 6). The Vikes women are split into two teams, the first of which plays at 10:06 a.m. today at Goudy Field. The women’s final goes at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, followed a half hour later by the men’s final.

On Saturday, March 14, the 2015 Junior World Rugby 15s qualifier series comes to Westhills for a 6:30 p.m. match between the under-20 sides of Canada and Romania.

Canada plays the U.S. on March 27 at Westhills (7 p.m. kickoff). The Canadians play both sides in Shawnigan Lake as part of the series. The aggregate winner advances to the Junior Worlds in Portugal this May as North American representative.

And April 18 and 19, the Canada Women’s Sevens host the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series matches featuring the top 12 teams in the world. The tournament is a qualifier for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Visit canadasevens.com for more information.
