The No 1 Auto Body midget Tyees hosted the Saanich Braves at the Rod Brind’Amour Arena last Saturday.
Right off the puck drop the Braves centre broke into the Tyees zone to fire a shot that beat Tyee goalie Nic Kirchner.
At 10:57 of the period Travis Goodwin took the puck across the goal and beat the Brave’s goalie with a backhand shot to tie the game. Saanich came right back to score at 10:31 of the period and then added a powerplay goal at 2:21. Tyees forward Goodwin banged in a rebound at 1:41 to make the score 3 -2 for the Braves to end the first period.
At 16:24 of the second period Goodwin scored his third goal of the game when he put a rebound off of a shot from Tyson Goebels past the Saanich goalie. Saanich responded with two goals at 13:42 and 1145. After the fifth goal, goalie Riley Mathieson came into the game for the Tyees. At 9:55 Tyson Goebel broke in one on one and went outside, inside to go around the defenceman, then beat the goalie low glove side. The teams went to the end of the second period with the Tyees down 5- 4.
At 14:59 of the third period Goebel got his second goal to tie the game at five. The Tyees had a two man powerplay at 12:47 but could not score. The Braves then converted a power play when a shot from the corner went in off a Tyees defenseman’s shin pad. At 6:13 the Braves jumped on a giveaway on the left boards, then passed to an uncovered player across the slot who put the puck into the yawning goal. The Tyees pulled their goalie with just under two minutes left, but didn’t generate any offence and gave up an empty net goal to go down 8-5.
On Sunday the No 1 Auto Body midget Tyees travelled to Nanaimo to play the Clippers. The Tyees played a solid, close checking game, which remained scoreless through the first period and into the second period when Nathan Hoff got a breakaway chance and put the puck through the legs of the Clipper’s goalie. The score was 1-0 at the end of the second period.
In the third period the Tyees had some good chances to score, including a two-man power play at 14:45. A subsequent power play resulted in a Clipper’s shorthanded goal to tie the game. Mathieson and the Clipper’s goalie made some key saves end the game with a score of 1-1. The Tyees edged out Nanaimo in shots by a margin of 34 to 24.
