Can you defeat the Vancouver Island table tennis champion?

Take the challenge Nov. 22 at the Hiroya Open Table Tennis Tournament in Cumberland

Get ready for a smashing good time in Cumberland.

The Hiroya Open Table Tennis Tournament goes Nov. 22 starting at 10 a.m. at the Cumberland Cultural Centre.

The inaugural event is in honour of Hiroya Boda – “A world-class player and super nice guy from Japan attending North Island College,” in Courtenay, a tourney spokesperson said.

There will be several categories for players of various abilities: including singles and doubles in Open A and B, Junior and women categories if there are sufficient entries.

Entry fee (to be paid at day of tournament) is $15 for one event, $20 for singles and doubles, $5 for juniors.

Also, everyone is welcome to enter the Hiroya Challenge: For $10 dollars you get to play one game against the newly crowned Vancouver Island champion and get $1 back for every point you score against him. If you beat him (good luck!), you’re $1 ahead. Proceeds of this event will go toward  Junior development of the club.

We will also hold a raffle for a custom-made table tennis racket (similar to the one Hiroya will be playing with), handcrafted and donated by Ed Schum, with proceeds going to the club to purchase more quality TT tables.
