Cold shooting from the perimetre cost the Canadian women’s basketball team in a 64-60 loss to France at the Olympics on Wednesday.

Team Canada, which features Mission natives Kim Smith and Teresa Gabriele, was within striking distance the whole way, and in the fourth quarter, they made a late rally. Facing a seven-point deficit with 53 seconds remaining, they got to within two with nine seconds left.

But France hung on for the win, improving to 3-0 during preliminary-round play, while Canada fell to 1-2. They had opened the Olympic tourney with a loss to Russia, followed by a win over host Great Britain.

Smith played a team-high 29 minutes against France and scored eight points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, while Gabriele notched three rebounds and an assist in 18 minutes. Team Canada missed all 11 of their attempts from beyond the three-point arc.

Up next for the Canadians is a date with Brazil on Friday (6:30 a.m. Pacific time, Sportsnet).
