Youth 'raise the bar' at 2014 North American Indigenous Games

Athletes from Canim Lake won 11 medals at the 2014 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) in Regina, July 20-27.

Cameron Amut, Quincy Archie, Dixie Boyce, Morris Boyce, Jollee Campbell, Lillian Emile and Montana Erickson were part of the athletics team, while Phoenix Paul, Julian Bob, Stephen Theodore-Jensen and Terrance Hubrick won a number of medals in canoe/kayak.

The theme of the Games, which saw over 6000 participants from 26 regions around North America, was “Raising the Bar.” As well as representing Canim Lake, the local athletes represented the province as members of Team BC, which made history in Regina as the first team in the Games’ history to win both the Overall Team Title and the John Fletcher Spirit Award, presented to the contingent that best demonstrates the spirit of teamwork, fair play, respect and integrity.

Team BC competed in 13 sports and won a total of 160 medals (63 gold, 49 Silver, 48 bronze) over the course of the competition week, one medal ahead of Team Saskatchewan.
