Nanaimo athletes paddled their way onto the B.C. Summer Games team.
The Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club hosted the trials for Zone 6 on May 5 at Long Lake, and the local club will be well-represented at the Games as two girls and two boys made the team. Jade Minor, Cameron Antifave, Danielle Caron and Ianna Folkes earned enough points paddling in four different events at trials.
“The sport of canoe-kayak was just reinstated into the Games in 2010 after a number of years of absenteeism due to the lack of representation by other regions of the Province,” said the NCKC’s Ashley Rowe in a press release. “This provides us with a great development stepping stone for our athletes who are on their performance pathway through other multi-sport games experiences, such as Western Canada Summer Games and Canada Games – inevitably readying them for other national level and international level competitions.”
Results from the trials include:
Male outrigger canoe – Jade Minor, second; Cameron Antifave, third.
Female sprint canoe – Danielle Caron, first; Ianna Folkes, second.
