Cascade golfers top ranked in Canada

Fresh off a Canadian championship, Aaron Pauls and his UFV golfers have been named the top men's golf team in the country.

In the latest vote conducted by the Golf Coaches Association of Canada (GCAC), the University of Fraser Valley men’s squad emerges as the top-ranked male post-secondary golf program in the country.

The Cascades, the 2013 PACWest and Canadian Colleges Athletic Association champions, earned 41 points, edging the University of Western Ontario Mustangs by two points.

The University of Victoria Vikes (36 points) finished third in the poll, with the Université de Laval Rouge et Or (30 points) and University of Toronto Varsity Blues rounding out the top five.

This is significant recognition for the UFV team.

These rankings go beyond the CCAA, encompassing all university programs in the country.

Many of the teams UFV has been ranked above are large programs competing directly against US adversaries.

“Even as the reigning Canadian champions, it still came as a bit of a surprise, albeit a pleasant one, to be given the number one ranking alongside many of the larger programs in Canada,” said Cascades head coach Chris Bertram. “Regardless, it is gratifying to be seen as the best in the nation in the opinion of the other coaches.  Now it’s up to us to continue to prove them right.”

Bertram’s crew includes four Chilliwack natives.

Fifth year player Aaron Pauls is the leader of the team, joined by fellow Chilliwackians Matt Gudmundson, Kyle Hayhow and Scott Benstead.

The team’s assistant coach, Brad Clapp, is a professional golfer and instructor at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club.
