Chilliwack-based Fusion Athletics came up with a gold medal performance at last weekend’s Sea to Sky International Cheerleading Championships, held at the Vancouver Trade and Convention center.
The Fusion youth team (nine to 12 years old) took top spot in their division over the two-day event.
“The girls went out Sunday knowing they were very close to first place,” said proud parent Lucy Prior. “They gave it their all with a tear-moving performance. It was pretty tight (two-tenths of a point), but they pulled it off. It was their enthusiasm, dedication and teamwork that made it happen.”
In addition to medals, the winning squad got a trophy, a banner and the coveted championship sweaters.
“That’s the key, and they’re all wearing them with pride,” Prior laughed.
Other Fusion teams fared well.
The senior squad finished fifth, the junior squad finished second and the mini crew placed third. The Tiny team (three to five years old) made the crowd smile.
“On behalf of all the athletes and the parents, we would like to thank Christa Tolmie and her coaching staff for all their hard work in training these girls,” Prior said. “The determination, energy and countless hours on the practice mat really paid off.”
