Chilliwack hosts mini-road racing nationals

The Greg Moore Raceway buzzes with activity this weekend as the Pacific Coast Mini-Road Racing Club hosts national races.

The first of three Pacific Coast Mini Road-Racing Club national races takes place this weekend at the Greg Moore Raceway in Chilliwack.

Riders from all over Western Canada will be tearing up the track, trying to knock off an 11-year-old kid. Chilliwack’s Jake Hayes is in the field, entering the competition as the regional points leader.

The pint-sized racer dominated his last round of racing, finishing first in three of four events at a PMRRC regional event at the GMR.

Racing against adults, he won handily in Spec Supersport, Spec Over/Under 21 and Formula Thunder.

His third place finish was in Motard, an expert class race featuring some of the best bikes and racers in Canada. After a crash in qualifying, he started at the back of the grid, working his way through the field to earn podium placing.

The club didn’t want Jake to race this class out of concern for his safety,” said his dad, Norm Hayes.. “Well, he proved that not only can he race in this class, he can stand on the box.”

This weekend’s racing takes place Saturday and Sunday. Practice and qualifying runs are on day one with racing on day two.

The event is free to spectators.

Jake heads to Quesnel the following weekend (Aug. 9-11) for another two days of national racing.

We haven’t raced Quesnel, but we know it has a few long straightaways,” Norm said. “With the way Jake rides he should do very well up there as well.”
