Chilliwack native Evan Foster had one quarterback sack and three tackles for loss and was named Defensive MVP of the 2016 CIS East-West Bowl, helping his team to a 29-14 win last weekend.

Foster, who plays university football with the University of Manitoba Bisons, was named to the Western roster for the showcase game and saw significant snaps, helping his stifling squad limit the East to 295 yards of total offence and just one touchdown.

“It was a great team win,” he said in a Bisons press release. “Everyone else around (me) played great which gave me the opportunity to make plays.”

Foster’s crew was made up of student-athletes from Canada West and three Ontario University Athletics (OUA) programs.

His head coach at Manitoba, Brian Dobie, was part of the Team West staff.

The Eastern roster was comprised of players from the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) and RSEQ (Quebec) conferences as well as OUA schools Carleton, Ottawa and Queen’s.

The East-West Bowl was designed for CIS players who will be eligible for the 2017 Canadian Football League draft.

Foster was in the spotlight through a week of practice, testing and evaluation leading up the game.

“It’s always nice to get the ‘W’ but the most important thing every year at the East-West Bowl is to provide the players with a great experience overall, and I feel we were able to do that this week,” said UBC Thunderbirds bench boss Blake Nill, who guided the West.

The Chilliwack secondary school grad is prepping for his third season with the Bisons, having earned Canada West all-star honours in years one and two.
