Cross country skiers reach podium

Nickel Plate Nordic skiers perform well in B.C. championships.

Fred Albrechtson and John Wilkie represented the Nickel Plate Cross Country Ski Club well at the B.C. Championships in Kamloops Feb. 17 to 19.

Albrechtson earned the bronze aggregate award in the Juvenile boys category and Wilkie was first in the mens 30-39 in both the 15-kilometre classic and 10-km skate races. Nickel Plate among 14 clubs that competed.

Other notable February club results include Tim Bell placing an outstanding sixth overall at the Gatineau World Loppet in Ottawa against an international field in both the 51-km classic and 51-km skate races, and Murray Farbridge won gold at the Canadian Masters Ski Championships in New Brunswick in the 20-km classic event.

Nickel Plate Nordic Centre is hosting a Skiathlon on March 4. It is a fundraiser to raise money to help pay for grooming equipment with the skill development youth program and the junior race team skiing laps. Food and drink will be sold as well. On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 there will be a barbecue at noon with steak or salmon, baked potato with fixings, salad, dessert and beverage all for $20. Eat, drink and be Irish.
