The Crush U14 Chaos had their first look at the top teams in the province last weekend playing in the 34-team Superspike in Burnaby.
Ranked 18th, the Campbell River girls fought through the backend of the draw needing to win their pool to advance to the Tier 1 playoffs. The girls dominated pool play with straight set wins over Ridge Meadows (25-14, 25-21), West Vancouver (25-13, 25-10) and Focus Fury from Surrey (25-20, 25-20).
Crush then faced a tough cross-over playoff game against sixth-ranked North Vancouver. The girls caught North Van by surprise as they came out fighting with some hard serving and excellent passing.
“The girls passed everything without a single error against a strong serving team,” said coach Jacquie Chase.
Kaitlyn Falk and Kaitlyn Herbert led the way with almost perfect passing. North Van took the first set 25-23, but Campbell River came back to take the second 25-18 and the deciding set 15-8 to advance to the quarter-finals against Sunshine Coast.
But Chaos had a shaking start and were down 17-2 and went on to lose the first set 25-14. The second set was back and forth with the teams tied 22-22. That’s when Sunshine Coast took control and won 25-22, and then went on to win the gold medal match.
In the game for fifth place, Campbell River knocked off Vernon in straight sets.
