Curlers claim Winter Games gold

Two Chilliwack girls helped their Fraser Valley juvenile women's curling squad to top spot at the BC Winter Games in Mission.

Chilliwack’s Cailin Cooke and Everly Royea helped their curling rink capture top spot at last weekend’s BC Winter Games in Mission.

The Chilliwack natives teamed with Coquitlam kids Dezaray Hawes and Jaymee Lynn to go 4-1, finishing with an 8-1 championship match win over Alyssa Connell’s Cariboo – North East rink.

Hawes skipped the foursome, which started with a dominant 14-5 thumping  of Lauren Walgren’s Kootenay contingent Friday morning.

Their only stumble came later that day with a 4-2 loss to Bailey Tinkler’s  Vancouver Island – Central Coast foursome.

They won both of their matches on Saturday, downing Erin Huitema’s Thompson Okanagan rink, 5-4, and  Taylor Reese-Hansen’s North West reps 6-2.

The gold medal match lacked suspense, with the Hawes rink piling up three in the third, two in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
