Three Salmon Arm cyclists put in a great showing versus very stiff competition in Canmore, Alta. over the weekend.

Thomas Hardy and John Connor, members of Team BC, and Kyle Flatman, cycling as an independent, were competing in the 2011 Canadian XC MTB Championships.

In the U17 Men, 21.9-kilometre, MTB Race mass start, Hardy placed third with a time of 1:13:14.8, Connor came in sixth in 1:14:37.8 and Flatman placed eighth in 1:22:25.9.

The boys claimed a number of wins at BC Cup events over the past few weeks to qualify for the nationals.

The week before, in the July 10 Rev El Stoked to Get Spanked mountain bike race in Revelstoke, a number of local cyclists put in a strong showing.

Lee English placed second in the 30-49 Men’s Elite 34-kilometre race with a time of 2:29:12.4. Coming right behind him in third place was Warren Ellis in 2:29:29.5. Placing 10th was Jordie McTavish.

In the 18-29 Men’s category, Connor took first with Hardy placing third.

In the Men’s 50-plus category, Chuck Connor placed third.

In the Men’s Sport 18-29 17-km race, Max Scharf placed second and Jonathan Ladyman fourth.

In Men’s Sport, 30-49, fourth was Tom Peasgood and fifth, Keith Hepburn. Eleventh was Greg Scharf and 13th, Ashley Ladyman.

In the Women’s Sport 30-plus 17-km. race, Katherine Ladyman placed third.

In the Stoked Male, U17 12-km. race, second was Seth van Varseveld, third Nelson Kleer, fourth Konrad van Varseveld, seventh Kyle Flatman and eighth, Aidan Hepburn.

In the Stoked Female U17 12-km. race, second was Thea Peasgood.
