December opens with struggles for Rivermen

Langley junior hockey team manages one point in three tries

The Langley Rivermen are off to a tough start to the month of December.

The junior A hockey club managed just a single point in three games over the weekend, battling to a 2-1 overtime loss to the Nanaimo Clippers on Sunday afternoon at Nanaimo’s Frank Crane Arena in BCHL action.

They had closed November with five wins in their last six games but that momentum did not carry over as the calendar flipped.

Scott Moyer’s third-period power play goal earned Langley the single point as Trevor Fitzgerald scored the winner 12 seconds into double overtime.

James Barr made 38 saves in the loss.

In Langley’s two other weekend games — both of which were at the Langley Events Centre — they lost 6-3 to the Coquitlam Express on Friday and 5-2 to the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Saturday.

In both contests, Langley was within a goal after 40 minutes, but could not net the equalizer.

Mike Tebbutt had a pair of goals against the Express, while Patrick Martens had the third goal.

Mario Puskarich and Darnell Dyck had the Rivermen goals.

The Rivermen hit the road for three games in two-and-a-half days.

They are back in Nanaimo on Friday and then in Cowichan on Saturday and Alberni Valley on Sunday afternoon.
