Abbotsford soccer player Gagan Dosanjh took home the male athlete of the year award at the UBC athletic department’s annual Big Block awards night last week.

Dosanjh, a third-year striker, earned Canada West men’s soccer player of the year honours after leading the conference in goals (12), assists (9) and points (21), and pacing the Thunderbirds men’s soccer team to an undefeated regular season (11-0-3).

He also won the MVP award at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) nationals in Quebec City last November, leading UBC to the title. The T-Birds beat New Brunswick 4-0 in the quarter-finals and Laval 3-0 in the semis to punch their ticket to the title game, where they edged the Cape Breton Capers 1-0 to clinch the gold.

In recognition of his memorable season, Dosanjh won the Bus Phillips Memorial Trophy as UBC’s top male athlete.
