The 31st annual Comox Valley Women’s Fastball League Charity Tournament has taken on an international flair.

Honoured in 1994 by Softball BC’s Senior Service Award for its many donations to Comox Valley charities supporting women and children, this year’s tourney is putting proceeds from 50/50 draws to Ugandan girls’ softball.

“We want to outfit one girls’ team with T-shirts and hats,” a CVWFL spokesperson said.

Kit Out Kids has taken on a fun challenge and could use your help. By September, they hope to kit out three girls’ softball teams from Kampala and nearby Lugazi in Uganda. For years the girls watched the boys play, but now they’re playing ball themselves.

“They borrow everything from gloves to pants to bats and balls. Sometimes they get what they need from the boys’ teams. Other times, they simply go without … and sometimes that means going without proper shoes or gloves,” a Kit Out Kids spokesperson said.

“Our goal is to kit out the girls from head (ball caps) to toe (cleats) and with as much equipment as possible. When your team wraps up the softball or baseball season please think of the girls in Uganda. We’ll take anything you might be retiring. They need everything from baseball socks, pants, belts, shirts, caps, cleats, gloves, bats and balls.”

This year’s CVWFL Charity Tournament goes June 14-16 at Lewis Park. Games get underway Friday evening and run through to Sunday afternoon’s final. Along with great fastball action, fans can enjoy food and beverages, games and a silent auction.
