The Women’s Mid-Island Amateur golf tournament had an impressive array of high-calibre golfers.
But none could keep up to winner Christina Spence-Proteau. The Port Alberni golfer, who is bound for the U.S. Women’s Open next month, won the Nanaimo Golf Club’s major annual ladies’ tourney this past weekend by 10 strokes.
Spence-Proteau shot a 148, beating out Nanaimo’s Amanda Baker, who came second, and Victoria’s Bree Sharratt and Penny Baziuk, who tied for third, 12 strokes back.
Darlene Ell was this year’s low-net winner with an adjusted 142 and Ann Frame and Nanaimo’s Sherry Coutts tied for second with adjusted scores of 146.
Some of the locals who won closest-to-the-pin contests were Sharon Dalgarno, Shauna Nirmal, Billie Chang, Georgina Hermans, Betty Cone and 11-year-old Shirin Anjarwalla.
