Five Spartans earn all-star honours

Trinity Western women's volleyball team was lone squad in Canada West with three first team all-stars

The Trinity Western Spartans women’s volleyball team had a conference-high three players selected Canada West first team all-stars.

Setter Nikki Cornwall, middle Katie Devaney and opposite Elly Wendel all earned the honour. The Spartans Sophie Carpentier was named a second team all-star and Rowyn Neufeld was selected to the all-rookie team.

Cornwall led the CIS in assists per set this year, with 10.45. Her assists per set tally marked the second best season in TWU’s program history.

Devaney was second in the conference in both hitting percentage, at .317 and blocks per set, at 1.25. She helped TWU to a conference-leading 2.74 blocks per set.

Wendel was fifth in Canada West with 3.50 kills per set and was fourth in the conference with 38 aces.

Carpentier finished the season fourth in the conference in both kills per set, at 3.82, and aces per set, at 0.48.

After missing the first two seasons of her career due to redshirting and injuries, Neufeld finally got on the court this year and her potential came to fruition. Playing in her first year of eligibility, Neufeld averaged 1.92 kills per set.

The Spartans are in Kelowna this weekend for the Canada West final four championships.

They advanced after defeating the Thompson Rivers WolfPack 2-0 in their best-of-three quarter-final series on Feb. 25 and 26.
