The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds (Major Midget) took three of four points this weekend from their closest rivals, the Valley West Hawks. On Saturday the T-Birds fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game late in the third period and salvage a 3-3 result. Nick Ponak opened the T-Bird scoring on a pass from Brice Sharp before the Hawks scored three unanswered. With five minutes remaining, the T-Birds scored twice with goals from Marshall Skapski and Jamie Housch, assists to Brett Clayton and Kaelen Anderson respectively.
Sunday’s rematch was a faster, more physical game, riddled with penalties. Both teams exchanged goals on the power play and while shorthanded, knotting the game at two entering the final frame. Zach McKee scored the T-Bird’s first, followed by another from Wight . The go-ahead goal came from Skapski as he intercepted a cross-ice pass and ripped it under the crossbar. The insurance goal came from Nolan Ferguson, who finished the scoring in the 4-2 victory.
Contrary to fowl flying south for the winter, the T-Birds are now heading north to challenge the mighty Cariboo Cougars for two games.
