SKIING: Silver Star club having a tremendous season

The Silver Star Freestyle Ski & Snowboard Club is having one of its most successful years ever.

Canada’s largest freestyle group has been to numerous competitions and are being recognized for their technique, style, and tricks while bringing home neck candy everywhere they go

In snowboarding, the team is led by coach Crispin Liscomb, an Olympian and world champion.

At the BCSA Seymour Provincials, Hunter McMorran was second in the U19 and third overall. Teammate Reese Tarassoff was second in the women’s U15 – twice.

Club riders will compete March 18 at Silver Star in a club event.

The B.C. Freestyle Timber Tour Series started the year at Apex Mountain in Penticton with more than 20 Silver Star athletes on the hill and several making top-15.

On the podium were Drew Christensen (Male 10), who won the big air super youth category ahead of teammates Nixon Swanson (M8) and Ryan Sewell (M8) and Carter Leahy (M14)

Chole Bicknell (Female 8) was third in the big air super youth category, second in the moguls and third in slopestyle.

Ryan Sewell struck silver and Nixon Swanson (M8) took bronze in the same discipline.

Mason Land won the slopestyle gold in M14 with Swanson and Drew Christensen (M10) second.

Anderson Erickson (M8), Anderson Bicknell (M10), Caleb Johnson (M12) and Carter Leahy (M14) pocketed bronze medals.

The freestylers just arrived home from Whistler Blackcomb Mountains on stop #2 of the tour and once again sparkled with Megan Henderson (F14) winning the female slopestyle crown.

Land was third in moguls, while Tate Garrod (M14) finished second ahead of Land in the slopestyle.

Keaton Dick has a stellar fifth in the moguls Timber Tour division, while Henderson was second in the Timber big air comp.

Jaxon Peters was second in the M14 big air, while Evan Bush (M14) was fifth.

The Big Mountain competition team chose three national events and two regionals to attend this year.

Jacob Tooke (M 15-18) was 11th place at the Red Mountain Canadian Open Freeride Championships.

At the Jeep Junior Freeski Nationals in Kicking Horse (Golden), the Big Mountain group showed great improvement in a tough field.

In the M12-14 category, Owen Tooke was 12th and Sam Rampado was 15th. The older category M15-18 found Jacob Tooke eighth, Liam Bush 14th and Declan Stevenson 19th.

Female member Jessica Brown (F15-18) went all out and unfortunately crashed before finishing the course and didn’t get the podium finish she was looking for, but earned huge respect from her teammates.

The Smith Optics Whitewater Junior Freeski Open in Nelson was great event to introduce kids to the freeski side of skiing.

Boys 15-18: 14. Jacob Tooke.

The Big Mountain team is heading to Lake Louise for nationals and Revelstoke for regionals, while the snowboard and freestyle crews will be at Big White (regionals).

The club hosts the B.C. Timber Tour Championships, March 23-26.
