The Scotiabank MS Bike: Thompson River Ride is happening on Sunday, September 20.
In preparation for this exciting fundraising event, there are a number of activities happening around the Kamloops area.
Events kick off on Tuesday, September 1, with a Gearing Up training ride. Presented by the Dirt Chix cycling club, this group ride is open to men and women of all cycling levels who are interested in learning more about, and signing up for, the Scotiabank MS Bike. Registration for the Scotiabank MS Bike will be available on site. The ride starts at 6pm at Riverside Park in the parking lot near the tennis courts. RSVP to katrina.harding@mssociety.ca.
Starting September 5, at 7am, Scotiabank MS Bike participant Ian Fillinger will cycle for twenty four hours straight to raise awareness and funds as a participant in the Scotiabank MS Bike. His ride begins at Riverside Park, and he will do laps of the Scotiabank MS Bike route out to the McLure ferry and back. A map is available to view at msbike.ca. On September 12, from 1pm-5pm, all proceeds from the Mount Paul Golf Course Driving Range will support the Scotiabank MS Bike. Hot dogs, and soft drinks provided by Pepsi will also be available by donation. Event organizer, Danny Latin, is using this as a fundraiser for his team called Team Latin. The Scotiabank MS Bike is the largest cycling series event in North America. This fun cycling event is suitable for various ages and fitness levels and brings people together for an important cause ‒ to end MS. Annually, over 10,000 cyclists across Canada participate in one – or two-day tours taking place between June and September.
This year is the 20th anniversary Scotiabank MS Bike – Thompson River Ride. On Sunday, September 20 starting at Riverside Park, cyclists can choose from a variety of cycling distance options from a 12km route to 91km “Ultra” ride. Participants who fundraise $200 or more will be treated to exclusive perks including a winery tour and wine tasting at Privato Vineyard and Winery. The whole event wraps up with a rewarding lunch back at Riverside Park which incorporates food donated by local area farms. There are also great draws and fundraising prizes available.
The money raised through the Scotiabank MS Bike is used locally to assist people living with MS and their families through programs and services in and around the Kamloops area. As well, the Kamloops and Area Chapter strives to provide hope for tomorrow by working collectively with other Chapters across Canada to donate to MS research.
To register, or for more information, visit msbike.ca or call Fundraising Coordinator Katrina Harding at 250-314-0773. Volunteers are also needed to support the event – details can be found on the Kamloops and Area Chapter Website www.mssociety.ca/kamloops under “Volunteer Opportunities”.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. It is the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives. The MS Society provides services to people with MS and their families and funds research to find the cause, prevention, treatment and cure for this disease.
