The Vancouver Coastal A girls team are tops in the province after defeating Fraser Valley 46-26 on Sunday at Abbotsford Senior.

The game started off with unbelievable energy from the players, coaches and fans. The gymnasium was packed cheering on the girls in the tournament’s final game.

Vancouver-Coastal played tough defence against Fraser Valley, but the Valley refused to give up. Lily Borseth had an impressive sequence of plays to keep Fraser Valley in the game, with a steal and scoring on a fast break in the opening quarter.

Vancouver-Coastal player Surprise Munie showed showed off her speed on the court, with an incredible and fearless block and then scoring point after point to lead her team to an amazing 21-9 score at the half.

The super competitive game had all girls from both teams giving it all they’ve got. Caelan Prescott from the Vancouver team was unstoppable in the second half, scoring a pair of three pointers in four minutes.

With two minutes left in the game, Vancouver-Coastal had everyone sitting on the edge of their seat, with the shot clock nearly ending. Several passes later, Alyssa Scott scored to add a little insurance for Vancouver-Coastal.

Vancouver-Coastal held on for the 46-26 win, and coach Tracy Clarke said it was a nice win for her team.

“I felt confident from the get-go that we could get to this point,” she said. “Our girls responded, adjusted and played our game, and we didn’t let them take us out of it.”

Playing at the same time was the boys gold medal game, which saw Vancouver Coastal A defeat Okanagan 69-65 in overtime.

Vancouver-Coastal also won bronze in the boys, with Fraser River winning bronze for the girls.
