Goodwin’s hot hand not enough for UBCO Heat

The UBCO Heat fell 83-74 in CIS Canada West men’s basketball league action Friday night in Prince George

The UBCO Heat never recovered from a sizzling second quarter by the hometown UNBC Timberwolves, and fell 83-74 in CIS Canada West men’s basketball league action Friday night in Prince George.

Both teams are now 2-5 on the year.

The T-Wolves outscored UBCO 27-6 in the second quarter to take a 38-23 lead into the intermission.

Armstrong’s Mitch Goodwin, the lone third-year player on the Heat, led UBCO with 18 points, half of them coming in the opening quarter.

Goodwin added six rebounds.

Franco Kouagnia led UNBC with a double-double, 20 points and 11 boards.

The two teams met again Saturday night in Prince George.

“We have to match their intensity and stick to our defensive scouting report,” said Goodwin in advance of the rematch.

In Kamloops, at the Tournament Capital Centre, the host Thompson Rivers University WolfPack were outscored 19-9 in the final quarter and fell 78-70 to Calgary’s Mount Royal Cougars.

Mount Royal improved to 4-3 while the Pack dropped to 3-4.

Josh Wolfram led the home side with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Vernon’s Brett Rouault, a fifth-year guard, chipped in 16 points for TRU.

Manok Akwl had 19 points and James Lefebre had 17 to lead the Royals’ scoring.
