Moore was raised in Barriere and over the years has returned to attend a number of softball games and tournaments in the area.

Gordie (Blackie) Moore grew up in Barriere, graduated from Barriere Secondary School, and has a passion for playing softball that  has brought him back to play in special hometown tournaments  many times.

Today, at age 60, Gordie says he has been involved with the game for more years than he can remember, “I played when I was a kid; and just never stopped”.

When Gordie found out that he had been nominated by two people from the Softball BC Association for an Athlete Of Distinction Award he was excited, and then much more so when notified he had been selected for the prestigious award.

“I was kind of excited, because I put a lot of time into the game and it is nice to be recognized,” said Gordie.

Among many of the memorable tournaments Gordie and his team won over the years were two Western Championships in 1983 and 1985. In 1987 he played in the Canadian Nationals taking fourth place, and in October 2009 he went to Australia to play in the World Masters Games.

Gordie has been playing regular games until this year, and he says right now he is undecided if he will still play in 2012.

The Annual Awards Banquet for Softball BC took place in Richmond, at the Chardon Hotel with about 150 people attending.

“It did feel pretty good to be presented with the BC Athlete Of Distinction Award,” said Gordie, “It’s great to be recognized for what I love doing – playing softball.”

Softball BC’s Mission Statement is:

“To promote, govern and build the sport of softball throughout the province of British Columbia.”
