Greater Victoria rink’s B.C. curling title dream ends in extra end

Sarah Wark rink wins some big games, can't get past Prince George team in Scottie's final

The third time was not the charm for the Sarah Wark rink against Patti Knezevic of Prince George at the Scotties’ B.C. Women’s Curling Championships in Maple Ridge on Sunday.

Wark, whose team plays out of the Juan de Fuca and Victoria clubs, beat former B.C. and Canadian champion Kelly Scott 7-6 in the morning semifinal, tied the championship final 3-3 in the 10th end but gave up two in the extra end, giving Knezevic’s rink the title.

The tight battle saw neither team steal any points and no multiple-point ends before the last one. Wark and company came back to tie the score 1-1 in the third end and 2-2 in the sixth.

Wark, who hails from Duncan and plays with Greater Victoria residents Simone Brosseau at third, Michelle Allen at second and Rachelle Kallechy at lead, qualified for the Page playoff in the number 2 spot, winning the B draw with a 7-4 win over Team Scott.

Before the final, Team Wark had two previous cracks at Knezevic, losing 7-4 in the A final and 8-3 in the Page playoff semifinal. The latter result forced Wark into the finals qualifier game against Scott, who had beat Kristy Lewis’ rink from the Royal City club in New Westminster 9-1 Saturday night.

The other Greater Victoria team in the competition, skipped by Dailene Sivertson, went 1-2 and was eliminated with an 11-8 loss to Scott on Thursday.
