The Victoria HarbourCats eked out an 8-7 win over a group of local upstarts taken from the Victoria Eagles and Victoria Mariners

The Victoria HarbourCats eked out an 8-7 win over a group of local upstarts taken from the Victoria Eagles’ and Victoria Mariners’ teams in the HarbourCats’ final tune-up prior to the start of the West Coast League baseball season at Royal Athletic Park on Thursday night.

More than 800 fans watched as the HarbourCats scored four times in the first inning and used seven different pitchers, including Saanich’s Eric Hegadoren.

HarbourCats third baseman Ted Boeke had two RBIs, shortstop Cole Kreuter went 3-4 with two runs scored, and the HarbourCats stole nine bases while building a 7-2 lead after five innings.

The squad of Mariners/Eagles made five errors but never gave up.

Jesse Mycock (Mariners) went 2-3 and Sam Stevenson (Eagles) 2-2 with a triple for the Eagles/Mariners.

Nine different pitchers threw for the Eagles/Mariners, who had faced each other at Royal Athletic Park on Wednesday night with the Mariners winning 4-3.

The HarbourCats now start the season with a three game stand today (June 6) in Kelowna against the Falcons.
