Hatley 8K draws nearly 500 runners to Royal Roads

Locals set the pace at annual race around the historic grounds in Colwood

Great weather brought out both the casual runners and the more serious competitors to the Hatley Castle 8K race Sunday around Royal Roads University in Colwood.

The Frontrunners Island Race Series event saw Victoria’s  Andrew McCartney and Alison Hooper cross the finish line first among their respective genders.

McCartney, in the  25 to 29 age category, was fastest finisher overall, timing in at 26 minutes, 39 seconds. Behind him were two other Victoria runners, Shaun Stephens-White (25-29) in second in 27 minutes flat, and in third, Shane Ruljancich (35-39) in 27:27.

Among the women, Hooper, competing in the age 20 to 24 division came across in 29:43, good for 11th spot overall. Placing second was Victoria’s Patricia Roney (30-34) in 30:24, followed by Julia Tschanz (25-29) of Victoria in 30:48.
