Reece Hawthorne’s fabulous summer on the water continues.

The Vernon wakeboarder, who won silver at the B.C. Summer Games in Abbotsford, competed at the provincial wakeboard/wakeskate finals on the weekend at Sproat Lake in Port Alberni.

On Saturday, the first day of competition, Hawthorne laid down his best wakeboard run ever in a competition and finished first in the preliminaries for his division.

As a result, Hawthorne got bumped up to the junior men’s pro division for the finals on Sunday and placed sixth in the province.

“I’d rather finish last competing against the best competitors than finishing first against competitors not as strong,” said Hawthorne, 15, a Fulton Secondary student.

“I’m happy with that. I didn’t land my whole run but I’m still happy with the result.”

He finished fifth in open-wakeskate on Saturday’s preliminary run and on Sunday he ended up second overall.  Hawthorne also placed first in the intermediate junior men’s rail-jam.

Hawthorne returns to Abbotsford this weekend for the national championships, held at the same venue – Albert Dyck Memorial Park – as the Summer Games competition.
