Herbert, McNeill lead the way for Olympians

Pair combine to win 15 medals, while Langley swim club win 38 medals total

Led by Bailey Herbert and Isobel McNeill, the Langley Olympians Swim Club placed third overall at a swim meet across the border.

The club was in Moses Lake, Wash. and were up against swimmers from B.C. and Washington State earlier this month (July 18 to 20) as a meet hosted by Pacific Coast Swimming.

Herbert, 11, took top spot in seven events (200IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 fly, 50 free, 50 beats and 100 free) and silver in three others (50 back, 50 fly and 100 back).

McNeill, 8, won five gold medals (50 back, 50 free, 50 fly, 50 breast and 100 free) with a new club record in the 50 back (49.79).

Both swimmers also won the highest aggregate point award for their respective age groups.

Mia Goretic, 10, also achieved her provincial AA qualifying time in the 100 back event.

Other medallists included:

Gold — Mia Goretic (50 back, 100 back), Alanna Picotte (200IM, 200 free), and Selina Schmelcher (50 breast).

Silver — Reagan Bedard (200 free), Erin Moloney (200 fly), Finnegan Parr (50 breast), Alicia Schmelcher (50 breast) and Selina Schmelcher (100 breast).

Bronze — Reagan Bedard (100 breast, 50 breast), Brayden Herbert (50 back), Hugh McNeill (200 free, 50 back), Erin Moloney (400 back, 200 back), Finnegan Parr (100 free), Severen Parr (50 free, 50 fly), Alicia Schmelcher (50 back), Selina Schmelcher (200IM, 50 back).

And while some of the younger members were at that meet, a trio of the club’s top swimmers — Hillary Metcalfe, Justin Schramm and Martha Metcalfe, were competing at the 2014 Canadian summer nationals in Saskatoon that same weekend.

Hillary Metcalfe made the consolation finals in two events, the 50 breast and 200 breast.
