The skating season has wrapped up for another year.
Now, it’s time for the hardware.
The North Island’s three hockey association will host their annual general meetings and awards events in the coming weeks, beginning Tuesday, April 2, with the Port McNeill Minor Hockey awards at Sunset Elementary School.
The North Island Eagles will be at Sunset the following night, April 3, and Port Hardy Minor Hockey will host its AGM and award night April 9 at the Civic Centre.
Both of next week’s events at Sunset begin at 7 p.m. The Port Hardy AGM will begin with a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m.
A feature of all three meetings will be elections of officers and directors and head coaches and referees. Organizers urge all potential volunteers to attend and consider signing up to help out in any of a variety of capacities for the 2013-14 hockey season.
For the third straight year, Port McNeill Minor Hockey is offering a $50 rebate toward the cost of a summer camp to all those who register early for next season.
The rebate may be used for either the Clayton Stoner Hockey Camp the first week of July at Chilton Regional Arena or for Lou Lemire’s popular annual summer clinic the following week.
Soccer refs sought
North Island Youth Soccer officials invite all comers to take part in the rewarding experience of refereeing youth soccer games this spring, and are offering a free clinic to provide the know-how.
The clinic will be held Saturday, April 6 at Sunset Elementary School in Port McNeill, with sessions for mini-level play (10-under) from 9 a.m.-noon and for divisional play (U-12 and older) from 1-4 p.m. It will feature both classroom and on-field components; participants are asked to bring cleats for the outdoor portion.
North Island head referee Scott Harris will co-host the clinic with Stu Power, head referee of the Comox Valley Soccer Association.
