Holdsworth mows down older opponent

Chilliwack boxer Shalynn Holdsworth is making a name for herself, knocking off older and bigger opponents.

Chilliwack’s Shalynn Holdsworth fought Jenna Luis (Port Coquitlam’s Beyond Boxing) at the Clash at the Cascades 16 Boxing Show, held Apr. 6 at the Langley Casino.

Under Combsports rules, the fight had to be held as an exhibition due to the age and size disparity between the two boxers.

Holdsworth, 13-years-old, weighed in at 112 pounds. Luis, 16-years-old, weighed in at 122 pounds.

Holdsworth made short work over her older opponent, badly out-pointing Ruis to take a unanimous decision. The fight could have been stopped earlier, with Holdsworth landing several unanswered combos, but the official let it go the distance.

It was the second win for Holdsworth in less than a month, and she’s now looking at a possible bout at the Junior Olympic Tournament, which takes place May 5 in Seattle. The tournament uses Olympic-style boxing rules and is designed to help develop future Olympic hopefuls.

Another local boxer, Darcie Kaye, fought for the Combsports Regional Belt.

The 27-year-old has developed at a meteoric pace, becoming one of the top five female amateurs in B.C. in just one year.

Kaye stopped her last two opponents with second round TKOs, taking the Pacific Northwest Championship with her last victory.

That earned her the Combsports title shot against veteran Alisah McPhee (Langley Boxing). The newcomer put up a furious fight, but lost to the four-year veteran as McPhee took the decision.

Both boxers train at Chilliwack’s Revolution Martial Arts and Fitness (#102-8030 Enterprise Drive).
