Hole-in-one for casual Langley golfer

Golfing for just the third time in four years, Mike Nagtegaal pulled off the improbable feat

Some golfing advice from his son definitely paid off for Mike Nagtegaal.

Golfing at the Falcons Classic golf tournament, hosted by Surrey Christian School at the Hazelmere Golf and Country Club in late June, Nagtegaal stepped up to the 13th tee.

The 54-year-old, who rarely golf — he has golfed three times in the past four years, and all three times have been at this event — was unaware that the 161-yard hole was designated as a prize hole worth $10,000.

After initially pulling out his four-iron, Nagtegaal took some advice from his son, Danny, who recommended he use a driver.

Nagtegaal obliged and hit a left-to-right slice that landed short of the green, rolled up towards the pin and then dropped into the hole.

Nagtegaal did not even see the ball go in as his glasses were soaked from the driving rainstorm.

All he heard were his son and brother-in-law — who were both in his group — start yelling and screaming.

“It was just one of those things,” said Nagteegal.

“Just goes to show that even bad golfers can hit a good shot every once in a while.”
