How’s fishing?

Winter fishing the last week off Sooke has been very good. Good weather, calm waters and steady fishing from start to finish keeps one busy and warm.

Out in front of the Sooke Harbour in 100 plus feet dragging the bottom for best results. Try the J-79 squirt trolled behind a  purple Hot Spot with a glow insert should get the job done. Glo hootchies as well as anchovies are good choices.

Nothing like hooking into a 15 pound winter chinook. It feels like it’s a lot bigger and with non-stop action the arm gets pretty tired.

On the derby scene is the second annual Boxing Day Salmon Derby. Fishing starts at dawn on Monday, Dec. 26 with weigh-in at 1:30 at the Crab Shack at Jock’s Dock. Last year was the first year for this event and it was a huge success with the winner taking home almost $1,500 in cash. Not a bad time of year to win a few bucks. Participating anglers are asked to bring along a non- perishable food item for the Sooke Food Bank, as well there will be another donate-a- fish draw for a rod and reel with the donated fish going to the food bank.

In the recent Coho Derby anglers donated over 500 pounds of fish to the food bank.   Until next time.

Keep your rod tip up!
