Hunter tracks down Island record

Carihi athlete sets javelin standard in Island track and field meet; CRCS distance runner claims two titles

Campbell River Christian School’s Joanna Williams swept to a pair of distance-running titles and Carihi’s Hayley Hunter set a new record in the javelin throw to highlight performances by local athletes in the annual Vancouver Island High School Track and Field Championships last week in Victoria.

Williams claimed the senior girls 3,000-metre title in 10 minutes, 32.33 seconds, beating runner-up Amy Morris of Wellington by more than 24 seconds, and added the 1,500-metre steeplechase, in 5:24.00.

In the junior division, Carihi’s Hunter shattered the Island meet record while winning the javelin throw with a mark of 38.91 metres. That easily surpassed the year-old record of 35.89, set by Reynolds Secondary’s Kelsey Carrothers.

Nathan Downey of CRCS claimed the senior boys 1,500 race walk by more than a minute, while lowering his previous best time more than 10 seconds to 7 minutes, 35.5 seconds.

Tekarra Reierson of Carihi won the senior girls 400-metre hurdles in 1:04.26. In second place after her preliminary heat, Reierson improved her time by nearly three seconds to claim the championship.

Carihi also won the senior girls 4×400-metre relay in 4:08.80, edging Wellington by 21-hundredths of a second for the title.

In the Grade 8-9 division, Timberline’s Joelle Gilkin doubled with wins in the girls 800 metres, in 2:32.72, and the girls 1,500, in 5:25.72.

The top three finishers in each junior and senior event qualified for the B.C. High School championships June 4-61 at Mcleod Athletic Park in Langley. Athletes who place 4th or 5th and who exceed the Open Zone performance standard may also apply for a provincials berth.

In the Grade 8-9 division, the top 24 qualifiers across the province, regardless of zone, are eligible to compete in a non-championship meet.

Automatic qualifiers from Carihi included seniors Reierson, Renate Bluschke (400 metres) and Trevor Enns (boys hammer throw); and juniors Kristin Gage (girls 300 hurdles), Mairin Shields-Brown (girls long jump) and Luca Mastrangelo (boys discus).

From Timberline, senior qualifiers include Marcus Savery (boys 110 hurdles) and Dale Straw (boys shot put); and juniors Olivia Hill (girls 1,500 run, 1,500 steeplechase) and Greg Hay (boys javelin).

From Campbell River Christian, senior qualifiers are Williams, Downey and Adam Guilderson (boys hammer throw).

Seever Rondquist qualified to represent Robron Learning Centre with a third-place finish in the senior boys javelin.
