Huskers hope for Rebel rebound

The Valley Huskers hope a winless Westshore Rebel squad makes for the perfect bounceback opponent, but the Rebels may be a tough out.

The Valley Huskers have had two weeks to reflect on their first ‘official’ loss of the season, and now head coach Tyson St. James believes it’s time to move on.

Time to forget a 56-3 thumping in Nanaimo Aug. 17 and look forward to a Saturday afternoon clash with Victoria at Townsend Park (2 p.m. kickoff).

The Huskers (2-1-1) face a promising bounceback opponent in the Westshore Rebels, a team still in search of its first win.

The visitors come in with an 0-4 record, giving up a league-high 199 points (49.75 per game) while scoring a league-low 66 (16.5 per game).

But Victoria’s record may be coloured by the opposition they’ve faced.

The Rebels have lost twice to the defending Cullen Cup champion Langley Rams, by scores of 69-10 and 58-20.

They stuck with a very good Okanagan Sun squad in week three, falling 37-26. And their showing against the Vancouver Island Raiders, in a 35-10 loss, was significantly better than Chilliwack’s.

This Rebels team may be a lot better than they appear.

The to-do list during the bye week was a lengthy one for the Huskers.

The defence was gashed to the tune of 596 net yards by the Raiders, with 338 of those yards coming on the ground.

The offence generated 208 net yards, just 59 of them through the air. Quarterback Cody Parray completed five of 20 passes with zero TDs and two interceptions.

Their only points came off a 27-yard Dan Erickson field goal.
