Chilliwack natives in last weekend’s Subaru Ironman Canada race in Penticton turned in a mixed bag of results.
Some good. Some not so good and some right in the middle.
As chronicled in Tuesday’s sports section, Anthony Toth did very well, finishing fourth overall.
His training partner, Scott Curry, wasn’t quite so fortunate.
Curry looked good early, posting the third fastest swim time at 54 minutes and 16 seconds — a full three minutes faster than Toth.
Curry posted the fastest bike time in the entire field at 4:45:07.
But then came the run stage.
Curry ruptured his Soleus muscle (calf) in last year’s Ironman, and hadn’t recovered enough to make a go of it in the final stage.
He tried his best, but ended up having to walk, and eventually shut it down. Curry ended up with a DNF, but Toth said he had a big impact on the race results.
Other competitors, unaware of his injury, pushed themselves harder than they should have in the swim and bike stages in an effort to keep up.
As a result, they were running on fumes in the run stage and proved easy pickings for Toth.
The third Chilliwack athlete in the field, Ronan Byrne, finished 1,033rd overall (in a field of 2,576).
Byrne competed in the men’s 40-44 division.
He did the swim in 1:13:57.
He did the bike in 5:48:53, which was the 582nd fastest time.
Byrne completed the run in 5:29:33, leaving him with a total time of 12:41:20.
