Jr. B Buccaneers beat first-place Cougars

The city’s junior B hockey club split a home-and-home series last week with the Victoria Cougars.

The Nanaimo Buccaneers showed that when they’re on their game, they can beat anybody.

The city’s junior B hockey club split a home-and-home series last week with the Victoria Cougars, losing 6-2 on the road Thursday before winning the rematch 5-1 on Saturday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

The Cougars are in first place in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s South Division.

In the Bucs’ win, Danny Pion, Chad Bell, Cole Broadhurst, Trent Bell and Cam Nickerson scored goals and John Hawthorne made 28 saves as his team outshot the visitors 33-29.

Two nights earlier, Nickerson and Jayden Schubert scored goals and Hawthorne suffered the loss as shots were even at 34-34.

GAME ON … The Bucs play the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Thursday (Dec. 1) at 7:15 p.m. at the NIC.
