Junior Blaze knocked out of top spot

Three straight losses for Langley U16 baseball team

For the first time since the season began back in April, the Langley Junior Blaze find themselves out of top spot.

A three-game losing streak — which dropped the U16 baseball team to 24-7 — puts Langley a half-game behind the the North Shore Junior Twins for first place in the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League.

The Twins (24-6) are white-hot, having won 14 straight games.

The Blaze lost 3-2 to the Abbotsford Jr. Cardinals on June 19 and then were swept 7-5 and 8-7 by the Vancouver Jr. Cannons on Saturday at Queen’s Park.

In the opener, the Cannons snapped a 5-5 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning while game two saw Vancouver win the game in the seventh with a walk-off two-run single, the second run crossing home plate on an error in the outfield. It was Langley’s fifth error of the game.

Danny Hollins and Nick Laflamme had RBIs in the first game while the other three runs were unearned as the Cannons committed four errors.

Laflamme had another two RBIs in the second game. Kevin Sengara and Brendan Holstrom had the other RBIs. Langley also scored three runs off five errors.

The Blaze will look to get back in the win column as they visit the Whalley Jr. Chiefs on June 25.
