Kal Tire cruises past Cleaners

It took awhile for both the game and Vernon Kal Tire to get started in Kelowna Tree Brewing Men’s 35+ Soccer League play at Marshall Field Thursday.

Kal Tire beat Kelowna Mission Cleaners 6-1 in a game delayed by 20 minutes at the start waiting for the cleaning crew to arrive.

Once the game began, Kal Tire decided to make things interesting in the first 20 minutes, allowing the cleaners to get up 1-0 on a defensive breakdown in the middle.

The tiremen then gained their composure. Jesse Knight started the scoring with a header over the keeper from a through ball from Ryan Sharp.

Knight got his second a few minutes later when he broke through the middle and rocketed one in. In the second half Mark Budgen made a beautiful pass to Kevin Lynes, who rifled a sharp angled shot. Lynes collected his second when newly discovered radio co-host Rodney Goodchild hit a shot that the keeper couldn’t control and Lynes got the easy tap in.

Later on, Sharp got the ball at the 18-yard box and hit a low hard shot that deflected off a defender and in.

Knight finished the scoring with his hattrick marker.

Graeme Magee, Kal Tire’s backup-to-the-backup-to-the-backup keeper, made a couple of great saves in the dying minutes of the game.

Amy Fitchett scored twice to lead OTC Sistas to a 5-2 win over Sir Winston’s Attack in North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Division 2 action  Thursday.

Kim Sylvester, Diane Neudorf and Andy Zubot had the other goals for the Sistas, who received tireless efforts at the back end from Becky Birbilis and Crystal Flasch, while Carmen Kinniburgh set up countless chances to earn player of the match honours.

Sir Winston’s most sportsmanlike player was Monika Speitelsbach and Ashley Straiger earned player of the match for an excellent game at sweeper.

Celine Conly not only played a great first half in net for the Attack, but also earned herself a beautiful goal. Azra Cawley played an excellent second half in net. Laurie Chickloski had the other goal and Tammy Dar worked hard the entire game for Sir Winston’s.

In Capri Insurance Okanagan Oldtimers 55+ Soccer League action, Vernon Silver Stars and Penticton played to a 1-1 draw.

Tony Munoz opened the scoring on a penalty kick for Kal Tire before John Matejicka tied things up for the Stars with a header.

Vernon’s back line of Randy Driediger, Rob Ross, Rich Zecchel and Wayne Folwer, along with stand-in keeper Al Bensmiller, had solid games for Vernon.

At Reiswig Park in Lake Country, Vernon Kal Tire suffered its seventh straight defeat, falling 1-0 to Lake Country FC.

The only goal came early from Al Mason on a rebound from a Mike Lee shot.

Keeper George Heiss robbed Kal Tire sniper Denis Chabot four times in the second half, and made a sparkling diving, fingertip save on a 15-yard  shot from Kevin Mitchell.

Wendy’s Man of the Match for the tiremen was centre midfielder Jim Sparrow, making a triumphant return from injured reserve.

The win was Lake Country’s first of the year.
