Tyler Fyfe scored with about two and a half minutes left in the third period to push the Nelson Leafs past the Castlegar Rebels 3-2 on the road Wednesday night.
In addition to scoring the unassisted goal, Fyfe also assisted on Nelson’s second goal.
The Leafs scored the only goal of the first at the 6:22 mark thanks to Nicholas Ketola.
Tayden Woods tied the game for the Rebels midway through the second before Rayce Miller put Nelson ahead 2-1. Nick Headrick replied for Castlegar to deadlock the game at 2-2 after two periods.
The Leafs outshot the Rebels 41-21, with Patrick Ostermann picking up the win in net for Nelson, while the Rebels’ Logan Sawka was saddled with a loss despite the heavier workout.
The win improved Nelson’s record to 7-5 and dropped Castlegar to 9-3. The Leafs are still third in the Neil Murdoch Division while the Rebels are still tied for first with Beaver Valley, but the Nitehawks have a game in hand and can take sole possession of the division lead with a win Friday.
Nelson’s next game is Friday at home against Grand Forks while Castlegar hosts North Okanagan on Saturday. Both games are 7 p.m. starts.
