KIJHL: Thunder Cats rout Leafs 7-1

The blowout led to a series of fights as the game progressed.

Grant Iles and Thomas Cankovic each scored twice as the Creston Valley Thunder Cats overwhelmed the Nelson Leafs 7-1 on Saturday.

Jake Livingstone, Brodie Smith and Aiden Wong also scored for the Thunder Cats (12-1-2), who are tied for the league lead with the Kimberley Dynamiters.

Patrick Ostermann, who played goal for the Leafs last season, made just 15 saves for the win.

Ryan Piva’s short-handed goal in the second period was the lone score for the Leafs (8-7-1). Devin Allen allowed six goals on 29 shots before backup Ben Kelsch took over in the third to stop nine of 10 shots.

The blowout led to several scrums and a long list of penalties.

Nelson’s Brendan Makay, Noah Looman, Jack Karran, Mason Mullaney and Brent Headon were each charged game misconducts for fighting. The Thunder Cats’ Lien Miller-Jeannotte, Jonathan Lee, Liam Rycroft, Justen James and Luke Kalenuik were also sent off.
